  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1/2 cup water (warm)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened for filling)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for filling)

Instructions

  1. Mix warm milk and water in a bowl; add yeast and let sit until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Add eggs, butter, food coloring, vanilla extract, and yeast mixture; stir until combined.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5–10 minutes until smooth. Let rise in a greased bowl covered with a damp cloth for about an hour.
  4. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly over it.
  6. Roll tightly from one edge to form a log; cut into 12 equal pieces.
  7. Place rolls in a greased baking dish and let rise again for about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. While baking, prepare cream cheese frosting by beating together softened cream cheese and butter; gradually add powdered sugar along with vanilla extract and salt.
  9. Frost warm rolls generously before serving.
